PHELLEM

Course: formHOLZ
Subject: Industrial Design
Supervision: Prof. H. Weizenegger
Duration: 12 weeks
Year: 2014
Cork, a natural material from the renewable bark of the cork oak, is 100% recyclable, light, soft, water-repellent and shock absorbing. The bicycle saddle Phellem leverages these exceptional material features. With its unpretentious design and the natural materials, Phellem assimilates the puristic appearance of modern city bicycles.

MATERIAL RESEARCH

This project is the result of an extensive material research. The aim is to explore new posibilities of the conventional production process of plywood.
Due to its non-fibrous, quasi-isotropic nature, cork can easily be formed into 3-dimensional shapes. Phellem is an example for this exceptional material feature.
PRODUCTION PROCESS

The shell is made of multiple cork layers. Plywood on the inside of the shell ensures the required stability. Together with screw sockets, all materials are joined in one single pressing process.
